We're the Lowndes County District 2 Volunteer Fire Department — your neighbors, your protectors. When emergencies strike across Columbus and surrounding areas, our dedicated volunteers answer the call with courage, training, and unwavering commitment to keeping our community safe.
We are not career firefighters with shift schedules and pensions — we're teachers, mechanics, business owners, and parents who live right here in Lowndes County. When the alarm sounds at 2 AM or on a sweltering July afternoon, we drop everything and respond. That's what volunteering means to us: your safety is our commitment, not our paycheck.
District 2 covers the Jess Lyons Road corridor and surrounding areas of Columbus, Mississippi. Our station at 128 Jess Lyons Road serves as both our headquarters and a beacon of reliability for the communities we protect. Every call we answer, every drill we run, every safety seminar we host — it's all driven by the same principle: this is our community, and we look out for each other.
All volunteers maintain current certifications in fire suppression, EMS, and hazardous materials response.
We live here, shop here, and send our kids to school here — your safety is personal to us.
Strategically positioned throughout District 2 for the fastest possible emergency response times.
From structure fires to medical emergencies, we provide a full spectrum of emergency response services to the residents and businesses of Lowndes County District 2.
Full-scale fire suppression for residential and commercial structures, including wildland-urban interface fires that threaten our rural communities.
First response medical care, patient stabilization, and coordinated transport — our volunteer EMTs and paramedics are often first on scene.
Specialized vehicle accident response including hydraulic rescue tool operation, patient packaging, and scene safety management on MS highways and local roads.
Trained hazmat awareness and operations-level response for chemical spills, transportation incidents, and industrial emergencies within our district.
Proactive fire safety inspections for businesses, community events, and residential properties — preventing emergencies before they start.
Free fire safety workshops, station tours, youth programs, and CPR/first aid classes for schools, churches, and civic organizations throughout Lowndes County.
Joining District 2 isn't just about showing up when the alarm rings. It's about Saturday morning training sessions that turn into brotherhoods and sisterhoods. It's about teaching kids at the local elementary school how to stop the bleed. It's about knowing that when you answer the call, three other people you trust have your back.
We welcome volunteers from all walks of life — no prior experience required for many roles. We provide the training, the gear, and the mentorship. You bring the dedication, the time, and the heart.
Whether you want to be a full firefighter, support behind the scenes, or just help out at events — there's a place for you here.
